Aphotic zone

The portion of a lake or ocean where there is little or no sunlight, typically receiving less than 1% of surface sunlight and precluding photosynthesis.

Benthic Zone

The ecological region at the lowest level of a body of water such as an ocean, lake, or stream, including the sediment surface and some sub-surface layers.

Epipelagic Zone

The uppermost layer of the ocean, extending from the surface down to about 200 meters, where enough sunlight penetrates to allow photosynthesis.

Euphotic zone

The upper layer of a body of water where sufficient sunlight penetrates to allow photosynthesis to occur.

Pelagic zone
