Unlike hard, transition metals such as iron or copper, elemental potassium is exceptionally soft, possessing a consistency akin to cold butter or soap, and can be easily sliced with a dull knife.

To understand potassium, we must look to its linguistic roots. The name potassium derives from the word potash—an early alkaline material made by leaching wood ashes in a pot (pot-ash). Humphry Davy, the pioneering English chemist who first isolated the element via electrolysis in 1807, coined the name potagenum before settling on potassium. In many European languages, the element is known as kalium, derived from the Arabic al-qalyah (plant ashes), which is why its chemical symbol remains K.
Physical Properties at Room Temperature
While classified as a solid, potassium sits dangerously close to its melting point. Its melting point is precisely 63.5°C (146.3°F). Because this is relatively low for a metal—though still well above standard room temperature—pure potassium metal holds its solid state on a laboratory bench, provided it is stored under mineral oil or kerosene to prevent violent reactions with atmospheric moisture and oxygen.
