The name oxygen comes from the Greek roots oxys (meaning "acid," sharp, or sour) and genes (meaning "producer" or "creator"). Combined, the name literally translates to "acid maker" or "acid producer."

This naming convention was coined by the influential 18th-century French chemist Antoine Lavoisier. At the time, Lavoisier and his contemporaries were studying combustion and the properties of various gases. When they burned non-metals like sulfur, phosphorus, and carbon in oxygen, the resulting oxides dissolved in water to form acidic solutions.

Based on these experiments, Lavoisier mistakenly concluded that oxygen was the foundational, defining element of all acids.

The Correction

Decades later, as chemistry advanced, scientists realized that Lavoisier's theory was incorrect. In 1810, the English chemist Humphry Davy proved that muriatic acid (now known as hydrochloric acid, $HCl$) contained hydrogen and chlorine, but no oxygen.

Other acids lacking oxygen were subsequently discovered, proving that hydrogen—not oxygen—is the essential chemical element responsible for acidity.

Legacy

Despite the scientific correction, Lavoisier's name for the element stuck. Today, while oxygen is vital for respiration and combustion rather than creating acids, the word remains a permanent fixture in the chemical lexicon as a reminder of early chemical history.
