Why is copper green?
Copper is a reddish-brown metal that is widely used in plumbing, electrical wiring, and roofing. Over time, however, objects made of copperโmost famously the Statue of Libertyโturn a distinct shade of green. This color change is not a sign of decay, but rather the result of a fascinating chemical process.
The Chemical Process
When exposed to the elements, copper undergoes a series of chemical reactions:
- Oxidation: Initially, copper reacts with oxygen in the air to form copper oxide (cuprite), which usually gives the metal a dull brown or black appearance.
- Hydration: Moisture and rainwater interact with the copper oxide, creating copper hydroxides.
- Carbonation: Finally, the copper compounds react with carbon dioxide and sulfur compounds present in the atmosphere.
The end product of these combined reactions is a mixture of copper carbonate and copper sulfate, commonly known as patina (specifically verdigris).
The Protective Layer
While rust on iron tends to eat away at the metal and cause structural failure, patina acts as a shield. Once the green layer forms over the copper, it seals the underlying metal from further exposure to oxygen and moisture. This prevents deep corrosion, which is why copper and bronze statues can survive for centuries outdoors with minimal structural damage.
