Why do we use base 12 for feet and inches?
The use of base 12 (duodecimal system) for dividing feet into inches dates back thousands of years to ancient civilizations, most notably the Mesopotamians and Egyptians.
Mathematical Advantages
The primary reason for choosing 12 over 10 is divisibility. The number 12 can be evenly divided by 2, 3, 4, and 6. In contrast, the number 10 can only be divided by 2 and 5. This made base 12 much more practical for ancient traders, builders, and craftspeople who frequently needed to divide lengths into halves, thirds, quarters, and sixths without dealing with complex fractions.
Historical Roots
- Ancient Egypt: The Egyptians used a cubit divided into palms and digits, and while decimal systems existed, duodecimal systems were favored for certain trade and architectural calculations.
- Ancient Rome: The Romans adopted a foot (pes) divided into 12 parts called unciae (meaning "twelfths"), which is the linguistic root of both the words "inch" and "ounce."
Despite the global shift toward the metric system (base 10), the foot and inch remain deeply embedded in imperial and US customary measurement systems due to historical precedent and construction standards.
