The Stratemeyer Syndicate, a book-packaging firm founded by Edward Stratemeyer, created the Nancy Drew series in the late 1920s. Stratemeyer devised the concept, outlined the plots, and assigned the actual writing to hired ghostwriters. To maintain a consistent brand and keep the authors' identities confidential, the Syndicate created the house pseudonym "Carolyn Keene."
The Real Authors Behind the Name
While several writers contributed to the early decades of the franchise, two individuals are most notably associated with bringing Nancy Drew to life:
- Mildred Augustine Wirt Benson: The primary author of most of the early books (starting with the very first, The Secret of the Old Clock in 1930). She wrote 23 of the first 30 volumes, infusing Nancy with her own independent, adventurous spirit.
- Harriet Stratemeyer Adams: Edward Stratemeyer's daughter, who took over the Syndicate after her father's death.
