The term "greenhouse effect" is rooted in 19th-century physics and the physical observation of how glass structures interact with sunlight and heat.
The Scientific Origins
In the 1820s, French physicist Jean-Baptiste Fourier was among the first to calculate that Earth's atmosphere functions similarly to a glass vessel. He suggested that the atmosphere lets visible light through to warm the planet's surface, but prevents the resulting heat from escaping back into space.
Decades later, in the 1850s, Irish physicist John Tyndall conducted laboratory experiments measuring the heat absorption of various gases (such as water vapor and carbon dioxide). He confirmed that certain gases could trap radiant heat, reinforcing the comparison to a gardener's greenhouse.
The Analogy
Just as the glass roof and walls of a greenhouse allow sunlight in while trapping the warm air inside, Earth's atmospheric gases act as an insulating blanket, keeping the planet warm enough to sustain life.
