The Etymological Roots
Linguistically, the names themselves reveal how science maps deep time:
- Triassic: Coined in 1834 by German geologist Friedrich August von Alberti, the name derives from the Latin trias (triad), referring to a distinct threefold division of rock strata found in Germany (Bunter, Muschelkalk, and Keuper).
- Jurassic: Named by French geologist Alexandre Brongniart in 1829, the term originates from the Jura Mountains, a sub-alpine mountain range between France and Switzerland where limestone strata from this specific geological period are widely exposed.
Ecological and Geological Shifts
The Triassic was an era of recovery and reinvention. Following the Permian-Triassic extinction event—which wiped out roughly 90% of marine species and 70% of terrestrial vertebrate species—the Earth was a hot, dry crucible dominated by a single supercontinent, Pangea.
