How does sandstone transform into quartzite?
Sandstone transforms into quartzite through a geological process known as metamorphism. This transformation requires immense heat and pressure, which typically occur deep within the Earth's crust during tectonic events like mountain building (orogeny).
The Transformation Process
- Original Material: Sandstone is a sedimentary rock composed mostly of quartz sand grains held together by a natural silica, calcite, or iron oxide cement.
- Heat and Pressure: As the sandstone is buried deeper or subjected to tectonic forces, the temperature and pressure increase significantly.
- Recrystallization: Under these extreme conditions, the quartz grains do not melt, but rather recrystallize. The individual sand grains and the silica cement fuse together, growing larger and interlocking tightly.
Resulting Characteristics
Unlike sandstone, which tends to break apart around the individual grains when fractured, quartzite is extremely hard and durable. When quartzite breaks, the fractures cut straight through the quartz grains rather than moving around them, creating a smooth, glassy broken surface.
