What are Roman Numerals?

Roman numerals are a numeral system that originated in ancient Rome and remained the standard way of writing numbers across Europe well into the Late Middle Ages. Unlike our modern Arabic numeral system (0-9), which uses place value, Roman numerals rely on a set of seven specific letters to represent values.

The Seven Basic Symbols

The Rules of Construction

Reading and writing Roman numerals follows a few logical principles:

  2. Subtraction: When a symbol of lesser value appears before a symbol of greater value, you subtract the smaller from the larger. For example, IV is 5 - 1 = 4.

Common Pitfalls

One of the most common mistakes is trying to represent the number 4 as IIII. While you might see this on some clock faces for symmetry, the standard mathematical rule is to use IV.

Another pitfall is forgetting that you cannot subtract a number from one that is more than ten times its value. For example, you cannot write 99 as IC (100-1). Instead, you must break it down by place value: 90 (XC) + 9 (IX), resulting in XCIX.
